In Dwelly’s Gaelic Dictionary (1901–1911), Kyleakin appears with two Gaelic names: the widely accepted Caol Àcainn and a more mysterious entry, Scalpa ‘Chaoil. But what exactly does Scalpa ‘Chaoil mean — and where did it come from?
